USMNT Russia Board: Youth takeover gaining momentum
Christian Pulisic and Jozy Altidore could be a lethal combination for the USMNT in the 2018 World Cup.
The U.S. national team has already turned the page following Tuesday's 1-1 draw against New Zealand. Next month's high-stakes World Cup qualifiers are now the singular focus for Jurgen Klinsmann and his squad. The battle to claim one of 23 spots for those November's games against Mexico and at Costa Rica has already begun. But while getting to Russia remains the immediate goal, doing well when they get there — assuming that the Americans are able to advance to their eighth consecutive Cup in 2018 — probably will depend on the continued development of several gifted prospects, some of whom won't be on Klinsmann's next squad.
Among the long shots for November are youngsters Julian Green and Lynden Gooch, two players who undoubtedly boosted their stock during the just-concluded international window. But while the Yanks' next two matches might come too soon for them, our Russia Board isn't about the present. It's about predicting the future based on the information we have today.
